ORGANIC GARDENING IN THE AMERICAN WEST
Growing Food in a Semi-arid Climate

“This is a new edition of a favorite popular book for western gardeners. Smith starts with a very practical chapter on tools. He lists and describes the essential tools needed for what he calls ‘hand’ gardening. These tools can be used to cultivate one-half acre or smaller spaces. There are directions on how to plant the garden. Following his logical approach to the subject, additional chapters deal with fertilizers, mulching, weeding and other gardening concerns. At least half the book is devoted to specific crops from asparagus to turnips. Assuming that you may have a surplus, Smith has a chapter on how to sell your produce. The illustrations include drawings, photographs and reproductions of old-time woodcuts. Cover art is by New Mexico artist Kris Hotvedt.”
